Shockwave therapy is a safe and clinically proven non surgical procedure to help with a range of chronic musculoskeletal injuries. Impulses of energy are delivered to damaged tissue to promote healing. Physiological effects from the shockwave includes increased circulation in the area to promote healing and reduce pain.
It can be a successful treatment where other conservative treatments have not improved the condition.
Injuries commonly treated with shockwave therapy include:
Plantar Fasciitis
Achilles Tendinopathy
Patellar Tendinopathy
Lateral epicondylitis (Tennis elbow)
Trochanteric Bursitis
Calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder
Proximal hamstring tendinopathy
How long will the shockwave treatment last?
The shockwave application will be around 10-15 minutes, but your appointment will last around 30 minutes to include assessment, other treatments including soft tissue work and rehabilitation exercises.
How many treatments are required
This can vary, but usually 3-5 treatments are required 7-10 days apart.
Are there any side effects to shockwave therapy?
Common side effects include
- bruising or redness to the treatment area
- minor skin damage
- an increase in pain in the short term
Who can’t have shockwave treatment
There are some contraindications to shockwave therapy where it cannot be used.
- During pregnancy
- If a pacemaker is fitted
- Over joint replacements
- Blood clotting disorders including haemophilia and blood clots
- If taking anticoagulant medication
- Infection in the area
- Open wounds
- If a patient has cancer
- If a patient has had a corticosteroid injection within 6 weeks
Why is the cost more than other treatment sessions?
The cost of the shockwave machine and the maintenance is expensive, so the additional cost per session overs this.
